Using Mosquito Nets and Common Sense to Prevent Malaria
Some people are hesitant about taking medication or drugs.
There are non-medicinal things that you can do to prevent
getting malaria.
The first step is to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes
in the first place. You can reduce the amount of time you
spend outdoors especially around dusk and dawn. You can wear
light colored clothing (preferably long sleeve shirts and
pants. Use a mosquito repellent that has DEET. Use mosquito
nets to protect you when you are resting or sleeping.
Remember though, this is a potentially fatal disease and
you should take care of yourself anyway you can!
If you are planning to travel to any of the following areas,
please consider taking preventative measures such as using
repellent or sleeping under a mosquito net:
- Parts of Central and South
America
- Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic)
- Africa
- the Indian subcontinent
- Southeast Asia
- the Middle East
- Oceania
Malaria prevention is vital. For any trip into a suspect
area that is going to include an overnight stay, mosquito
nets are vital. Mosquito netting should always be carried
with you when you travel in risky areas. No other malaria
prevention is as effective or inexpensive. Remember, it only
takes one mosquito to infect you. If the mosquito net is Permethrin
treated, it will continue to provide protection even if it
develops a rip.
